1/29/11
Today was the first full Saturday! I got up at around 7:30-8ish because I had dish crew. When I finished I read my articles for English that we had to read for class today. Noah arrived at 10:50 and we started class at 11. We discussed 2 articles that we read with very different views about where to spend your money, etc. One article basically told you to give away a significant amount of money to charity and we discussed our views on it. Then we did some examples and role-playing with the “lifeboat” and the “train track” metaphors. It was an interesting conversation that ended up being very heated in the end. Then Noah read some journal entries from this week. We have to write in our journals weekly and give it to Noah every Friday so he can read some of the excerpts on Saturday class. We then split up into two groups for afternoon activities after lunch. Some of us went to the Air and Space Museum, and others went to the Natural History Museum. We were supposed to go to the Art Museum, but Robbie decided he wanted to take us to the Natural History Museum instead, even though we all think he just got us lost and it was a cover up. We stayed there for about an hour and a half to 2 hours, then walked home. Marcy, TJ, Jon and I had a long, 3, almost 4 hour, conversation and then we all went to bed!
1/30/11
Finally, since today is Sunday, we got to sleep in. I slept in until about 10:45. I would have slept longer but Tony woke me up and asked me if I wanted to go to Starbucks with him, Marcy and TJ. I didn't end up going but I went downstairs with my computer to skype friends and talk to people. Then at around 2ish, we had a choice to either go to the East Market or just a quick run to CVS and back home to the dorm. Since I was feeling gross and sick, I just went quickly to CVS with Andy, Erica, Doris, Yiwa, Vanina, Olivia, and Sara, and then went back to the dorm to just hang out and work on homework. I did homework with Andy while we waited for everyone to come back to the dorm from the East Market. Then we did more homework at the house and it was time for dinner at around 6. We had dinner and then played a huge game of Apples to Apples in our room. It was hilarious, mainly because Tony had no idea who Claude MoneT was. It was a really fun game, and Vanina obviously won, because she wins every time during that game. Then we were interrupted by Robbie because we had our second dorm meeting of the semester! It was interesting and we talked about the idea of having our technology taken away for 10 days, which was a great idea by Jon, and just some general dorm announcements. Then Tony dressed up for the fashion show, which we have weekly of random items found in the laundry room. It was histarical. Then we played more Apples to Apples and I eventually took a shower and went to bed.
1/31/11
Today was also a regular day of classes. Accept I didn't have Latin! YAY. I also went on a night walk with Marcy, Tony, and Jon down by the Capitol at night. We just sat down on the area in front of the Capitol and looked at the Washington Monument. It was one of the first times I've seen all of those places from that angle since I've been here and it was beautiful! I love DC. Also, Olivia just got out of the shower and cut her knuckles with her razor and it rummaging around the room trying to find something to wash the blood off. She wanted me to write that in my blog for some reason. I love my roommates!

Days Six and Seven
1/27/11
Today was a completely normal day of classes at school. Nothing out of the ordinary happened today!
1/28/11
Today was all regular classes until lunch, which was shortened because of our afternoon adventures. We had our regular afternoon classes and then walked over to congressional building where representatives from all different states have their offices. We met with Robert Bacon, Tim Ryan’s (D-OHIO!) assistant and did a mock lobbying project for them where we presented our ideas about how to solve climate change in China. Then we met with Andrew Brandt, Randy Neugebauer’s (R-Texas) assistant. It was really cool to lobby to them because they gave the people who spoke criticism and good comments about their lobbying, and they thought we did pretty well for our first time! Especially having only 2 days to prepare for our presentations. Then we came home and just hung out for a while before dinner. At about 9ish, we all went to Good Stuff Eatery, this awesome burger and shakes place, owned by Spike from Top Chef, and got shakes and hung out at the restaurant. We came back home and al went to bed fairly early because of the day’s activities. It was a really interesting day!

Day Five

1/26/11
Today we woke up to a ton of snow. It was awesome and it looked just like Cleveland. We walked to the Metro and got to the 4th stop before getting off and there was a fire on the metro so we had to walk the rest of the way to school in a snowstorm. It was awesome though. Then we had school meeting, which Andy led. Then we had rotations where we talked about climate change and pollution in China. There were four different rotations before our speaker Todd Stern, the US. Special Envoy for Climate Change can and spoke to us. Our first station was with Kat, and we just basically discussed issues the entire time. Then we went to Robin downstairs in the science room, where we looked at charts, and basic data regarding China and the pollution there. We had a break where we talked to Gray and told him about the stations and he taught us more on the issue and about Todd Stern. After the break we went to our last two rotations, first being Noah, where he asked us questions about what our ideas were on the issue and thought of questions we had for Todd Stern. Then Lucy was the last rotation and she gave us a mini college course on Ethics, possibly? I really can’t remember, but I remember at the time I really enjoyed it. We had lunch; I had a crunchy peanut butter and Nutella sandwich. Were all pretty crazy in love with Nutella here. Next Todd Stern came and talked to us about his job, everything he does, and plans for the future. We then worked with our groups, mine consisting of Yiwa, Jacob, and Jessi, on our case study. We are meeting with 2 Representatives, a democrat and a republican, and are lobbying them. So we worked on our scripts and collected more information about the two people who were going to be speaking with. One being the assistant to the representative in Ohio! We then had chores and left for a miserable walk to the Metro in a huge snowstorm. Oh, and we also had a huge snowball fight outside the academic before walking to the Metro. We came home and just hung out until dinner. After dinner of stir fry, I worked on CoGoPo with Jon and hung out with everyone down in the common room. The humble was my blog….After dinner we hung out in the mancave and finished last minute homework assignments. Then I skyped with some of my friends back at home and went to bed!
Day Four
1/25/11
Today I woke up at around 7:45, which was the earliest I’ve woken up here so far. Tony and I decided to wear shorts today, which was an interesting experience! When we got to the Metro, it was crazy as usual. Once we got to the academic, we went straight to the parlor for school meeting, which is every Tuesday for about an hour. We talked about chores at the academic, and this weekends activities. I had Precalc first, where we looked at our diagnostic tests which we had for homework. Next I had CoGoPo with Gray, where we learned about Britain and then Gray taught us how to speak like a royal British person by saying “AirHairLair.” It was quite interesting and Tony says it all the time. Then I went to US History with Gray, which is always an interesting class. Last period I had Latin class which was obviously extremely intimidating, again, but I feel like I am learning a lot. Then we had chores, but I couldn’t do mine because Mr. Warren insists we continue working on Latin, even during chores block. Then we went home and TJ, Tony, Marcy and I got ready for our jog near the Capitol and some of the monuments. We saw tons of police because the State of the Union was going on tonight, which we watched when we got home during Flex Period after eating amazing chicken fajitas for dinner! After watching the State of the Union, which basically took place right next door to our house, we discussed quickly about wheat Obama said, and Andy and I had a facebook war. Then we helped the boys pick out their clothes for school Wednesday because we had to dress up since we have a guest speaker coming to talk to us. I took a quick shower and went straight to bed!

Day Three
1/25/11
1:08am
Today was the first full school day at SEGL. While most people woke up at 7:30 or around then, my roommate Olivia and I woke up at 8:10, and we leave for the Metro at 8:15. We got dressed and met everyone downstairs who was waiting in the foyer. We headed out and walked about five-seven minutes to the Metro at Union Station. Walk for Life was today so when we arrived at the Metro, it was extremely crowded and the train was delayed 10 minutes. When we got on it was insane with people everywhere. So I decided to make it fun and Metro surf! We walked about five minutes to the academic and went into the big room in the front for Ethics and Leadership. We did a skittles activity where we each began with a certain number of skittles (in my case, I started out with 0, others with 4 or 5) and we had to run around the house in order to find skittles. The point is that we were doing a simulation in which we are the only survivors of a nuclear holocaust and each skittle represents a resource. It seems pretty easy, but along the way you will get cards from Noah. For example, I got the “now you are allergic to orange skittles,” so I couldn’t eat those. Or some people would have cards that said if you are blind, eat five skittles and you can see again. We did this simulation for about an hour. There were some particularly interesting parts including when Tony “broke his leg” and couldn’t move from the stairs, so Andy carried him all the way down the stairs into the big room. Yet even though he had a “broken leg” he still crawled around using only his arms to find more skittles, which surprisingly, he did. When the simulation was over, we discussed out strategies and how well they worked out with Noah, then learned about Aristotle, Kant, and Mills. After that, I had my first class, Precalc, with TJ, Andy, Quinn, and Yiwa. It was quite an interesting class and we got a lot of homework for the first night which most of us were rusty on. Then we had lunch of this Indian food that I have no idea the name of, but it was really good. Then I had two free periods in a row where I worked on math for the first one, and then just hung out with everyone during the second free. Then I had US History with Gray, and it was really cool to see where everyone is in his or her classes at home and things like that. We did a mini-evaluation quiz to see how much we remember and know about US history. After that I had Latin with Mr. James Warren. It was the most intimidating thing of my life, but he’s a really cool teacher who knows a ton about Latin. Plus, he’s British. That went until about five pm, and then we left for the Metro ride back home. We went back home, helped unpack foods from the car, including Nutella!!!!, and then we got our clothes for the gym. We went to the Washington Sport Clubs gym for a little while with Andy, TJ, Tony, Jon, Marcy, Erica, Sara, and me. We stayed there until about 7:15, came home, and had pasta, meatballs, and garlic bread for dinner, which was delicious. We got out our homework, and began our first night of homework at SEGL. It was hard to get things done at first but it all worked out okay! Then we had hot brownies and went upstairs for check-in. It was an eventful day, and so much fun. I’m so glad I’m here.

Day Two!
1/24/2011
12:50am
So today was the second day at SEGL and the first full day of the semester! People did lots of different things this morning. Some people slept in, and others went on a tour around the block or to the gym. I slept in until about 9 and went downstairs with Jacob, Tyler, and our RA Lucy to hang out and be on our computers. When everyone got back, we set up for brunch at 11:30, which were bagels and locks. After eating and having interesting lunch conversations about hummus and almond milk, we got ready and left the house. When we got to the academic, we went over two lists. The first was what makes a good leader? And what makes a good follower? All of us came up with at least one thing for both questions. It was our first real learning activity with all of us together. Then we split into 2 groups. Mine consisted of Tony from Texas, Doris from Texas, Marcy from Georgia, Andy from California, Jon from Rhode Island, Jessie from New York, Tyler from Washington, and then me. Our group was amazing! We had such a fun time. First, we went upstairs to the science wing where we were with Gray, the academic dean, and we had to blindfold each person, one at a time, and guide them by using communication though the “mine field.” It was really interesting and fun and after we finished we talked about why communication was important and who the dominant leaders in the group were. Then we went downstairs to do trust falls with Robbie, which was hilarious. Tony and I were partners and he honestly made me fall so far and it was so scary but in the end we had so much fun and all trusted each other. But that was just the beginning, then we started doing trust falls of tables. It was such a good exercise! Then we did the spider web activity where each person had to climb through holes without touching the “web,” which was strings. Andy and Tony lifted me about 4 feet off the ground and passed me through one of the holes in the web. Andy is 6’4 by the way, and they passed me to Jon on the other side. It was so scary but it was all about trust in most of the activities. Plus, we were the first group in SEGL history to get everyone through the web in record time! Then we went downstairs and each wrote a goal on an index card for the semester. Then we laid down and put the cards next to where our head was when we laid down. We all stood in a small circle and had to figure out a way to get the cards. Tony basically held onto everyone while we slowly got lowered down. It was quite amusing. And while lowering Andy, Tony did a huge wipeout, which was hilarious! Then we did mini advisor meetings just to check in and to see how everything was going. We got our books for school also in that time. Then we went on a CVS run down the street. Marcy, Tyler and I honestly looked everywhere for Nutella, but no one had it! The guy at CVS didn’t even know what Nutella was. Then we had dinner of pizza and our first academic session started after that. It was our first ethics class! We watched the ten minutes leading up to the 9/11 attacks, when it happened, and about 30 minutes after it happened. Then we debriefed and had a really good conversation about how we felt, and what we remembered from that day. We also talked about how calm the reporters seemed and other thoughts we had on the video. By that time it was extremely late for us since we were all tired, even though it was only about 8:30, and we headed back to the dorm. Also on our way back, we learned that TJ is deathly afraid of ostriches due to a horrible petting zoo experience. So we printed out ostriches and hung them all over his bed. He said he isn’t sleeping tonight; oh gosh. So we came back to the dorm, had our first dorm meeting and went over dish crew, chores, and all the kinds of things about the house. Lucy set the alarm, we hung out and got our school stuff ready for tomorrow, and went to bed!

Day One in DC!
1/23/11; 12:10am
So I arrived in DC yesterday and today I came to school! I arrived at the residential building at 10:30 sharp and met one of my three roommates, Tyler. She had bottom bunk on the left side of the room. I took the top bunk on the right side of the room though. Our room is actually really spacious and I love it. We have the front room so it’s facing out into DC, which is amazing! So after arriving at the residential, I unpacked and reorganized all my stuff, made my bed, and met some other people here at SEGL. Then, my mom, dad, and I drove back to the hotel to drop off the car and walked to a pizza place called Pizza Paradino (sp?) in DuPont circle. After an awesome lunch we went to the academic building. We were early so we talked to Gray, the academic dean, and Noah, the director, and one of my classmates, Andrew, who had just taken the SAT this morning. Most other families stayed at the residential and ate and took the Metro over so they met us at the academic. When everyone arrived, all of the kids went upstairs to the second floor and the parents stayed downstairs and had their little meeting with Noah. Lucy, our residential advisor, gave us a worksheet to fill out which was our first ethics activity. There was a situation and we had to describe what we thought the person should do in different ones; that’s the basic version. It took about 30 minutes. Then we all introduced ourselves, told everyone something about ourselves, and then where we’re from. There are lots of people from Washington State, a few from Texas, Georgia, LA, and even Alaska! Then we got another sheet that gave us three options on it, which allowed us to decide where we were going for the day as our first group activity. We chose to go to the Natural History Museum to look at a photography exhibit there. There were lots of pictures in different countries like South Africa and Tibet, and then there was a big presidential exhibit with lots of photos of Obama, and also of Richard NIxon, Bill Clinton, and the list goes on. After we walked there and saw the exhibit, we walked to the White House, where we saw our first protest! It was awesome, and I took way too many pictures of it. Then we walked back to the Academic building and had a dinner of Baja Fresh, which I’d never had before, and it was actually delicious! Then we got into a big circle and went over rules while here at SEGL and about the facility and about the staff, and basically everything we would ever need to know while here. Then we did some ice-breakers in between. We did a game where we had to get into alphabetical by first name without talking. Then, when we got to the dorm earlier this morning, on our doors were these cards with countries of the world under each of our names, and I was Nepal, so we had to pretend the floor was a big map and put ourselves where the country we had was on the map. It was a fun activity…even though some of the countries were just a little off. Then we played train-wreck, which was hilarious and so much fun. Someone stands in the middle and says something true about themselves. Noah started out by saying, I’m a duke basketball fan, so whoever was a Duke basketball fan has to stand up and trade seats with someone else in the room, and it can’t be a seat next to you. It seems all nice but some people were flying all over the room to try to get a seat, and my roommate, Tyler flipped over her seat, actually. It was hysterical, and quite a scene! Then we walked to the Metro, in freezing weather by the way, and boarded the Metro to the residential facility. We got off the Metro then walked to the residential and had dorm meeting for about an hour to talk about dorm rules, kitchen rules, and everything like that. And of course, the “gender rules” about having the door open at 90 degrees and clothes on at all times, and no horizontal. Then we got together shower schedules and things like that between specific floors. Then we went back to our rooms and just hung out with our roommates and chilled for a while. It was such a fun first day and I already love it here! I can’t wait for this semester!
